We recently completed a renovation project close to our hearts, thanks to an innovative, local, and abundant Swiss insulating material: sheep’s wool, supplied by Fisolan, based in the canton of Bern. This choice came naturally, both for its ecological qualities and its technical performance.
Sheep’s wool offers outstanding thermal insulation (λ: 0.036 W/m·K), but what truly convinced us was its ability to absorb moisture while maintaining its effectiveness. Unlike many other insulators, it can retain up to 33% of its weight in water, which protects the structure over the long term and prevents condensation. This natural humidity regulation ensures a consistently healthy and comfortable indoor environment.
Another key advantage: sheep’s wool neutralizes certain pollutants such as formaldehyde, is naturally resistant to pests, and is difficult to ignite, all without the need for heavy chemical treatments. It is also a natural, renewable material, rooted in local expertise, and has zero embodied (grey) energy—one of its greatest strengths.
The insulation also stands out for its ease of installation, long-term stability, and fully biodegradable nature. For Victor Gindre & Fils, who were installing this ecological material for the first time, the feedback was extremely positive—they found the installation particularly easy:
-
Panels that do not deform
-
No protective equipment required during installation
-
A material that does not cause itching
Our commitment to sustainability and zero waste drives us to stay attuned to innovations, explore new materials, and collaborate with dedicated local partners.
This approach also encourages our contractors to source more responsible materials and to reference new suppliers, helping to democratize the use of ecological solutions—just as we did with Fisolan sheep’s wool insulation.
